Major Samuel Loyde Maxwell

Major Samuel Loyde Maxwell

Major Samuel Loyde Maxwell, 86, died Sunday, July 27, 2008 at his residence under the care of Vista Care Hospice.

Major Maxwell was born in Lavonia, Georgia on October 2, 1921 to the late John M. and Bessie Hayes Maxwell. He served in the United States Army for over twenty-two years before his retirement. Major Maxwell served the combat infantry division in the European Theatre during World War II. He received many awards and medals during his career in the United States Army including the Purple Heart, American Defense Service Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Bronze Star Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and most notably, the Silver Star, which was awarded for gallantry in action in France when Major Maxwell courageously moved seventy-five yards ahead of his entire platoon to combat the enemy alone. Despite his exposed position and intense hostile fire, he cleared the way to the objective. Following the war he became military governor of a providence in Germany. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Clyde Maxwell and first wife, Mae Louise Maxwell.

He is survived by his wife, Colleen Dykes Maxwell of Savannah; daughters and sons-in-law, Marsha and John McMullen of Columbia, SC and Lynn and Jim Keen of Richmond Hill, GA; sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Titus Rodgers; grandchildren Michael Washburn and wife, Jamie, Brian Sadowski, Annie Sadowski, Steven Thomas, Kelly Wagner and husband, Daniel; great-grandchildren, Michaela Washburn, Maxwell Washburn, Madison Bell Wagner and Meredith Lane Wagner; and several nieces.

Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday, July 28, 2008 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors Hodgson Chapel.

GUEST BOOK

Dear Family, Uncle Loyde was very very special to me. He provided wisdom and insight many times over the years. He always made time to visit when I was traveling through town if only for a cup of coffee. He was always there to listen and support. He had a delightful wit about him. I will always treasure my memories of him. I will miss him tremendously. I know that he is in Heaven with Grandma, Papa, Aunt Louise and was there to welcome Daddy two weeks later. All my love to each one of you, Carol
